RME Old Stuff, New Findings. Efficiency in Clinical Orthodontics. Class II, Back or Forth? It Matters!

St. Petersburg 7-8 October 2016 Photoreport

“RME Old Stuff, New Findings”

What happens to the patient skull when you expand rapidly the palate? The presentation will illustrate forces and skeletal movements provoked by RME, then it will be presented and explained a different RME appliance. Finally there will be an evidence based explanation on why, when and how applying this technique.

“Efficiency in Clinical Orthodontics”

Dr. Andrews developed the Straight Wire technique in the seventies in order to avoid excessive wire bending as proposed by Dr. Tweed, since, brackets and wires have dramatically changed, but the principles of SW remained almost unchanged. In this presentation a technique that maximize efficiency will be presented. In addition, modern orthodontics tend to lessen the impact of patient compliance during treatment. Few simple, no compliance and efficient techniques will be highlighted and clinically demonstrated: the latest scientific evidences will be presented on how to manage anchorage with and without the use of TADs.

“Class II, Back or Forth? It Matters!”

Traditionally, Class II malocclusion can be treated distalizing the maxillary arch or enhancing mandibular growth. Our researches on molar distalization in growing and nongrowing individuals, with or without TADs, will be presented together with our studies on patients treated with the Herbst appliance with or without skeletal anchorage.

Finally a limited literature review will be presented and personal conclusions will be drawn.
Learning objectives:
• “RME Old Stuff, New Findings”: The participants will be informed on the reaction of the human skull during and after a RME procedure, they will be able to chose the best timing for RME.
• “Efficiency in Clinical Orthodontics”: The participants will be informed on the new scientific evidence on wire/brackets interaction, they will be able to apply these information in the clinical practice.
• “Class II, Back or Forth? It Matters!”: the participants will be informed on different type of molar distalizers and on the researches that compares them with and without TADs, moreover they will be informed on mandibular incisor anchorage control when a mandibular protractor device is used.

Mauro Cozzani DMD, MScD
Dr. Mauro Cozzani earned his degree in Dentistry summa cum laude at the Università degli Studi di Milano, and gained his specialization in orthodontics at Boston University, earning his Master of Science in Dentistry. At the Université de Borgogne in Dijon, France, he earned the Diplome Universitaire d’Orthodontie, at the Università degli Studi di Parma attended the “Corso di Perfezionamento in Ortodonzia Intercettiva” and at the Università degli Studi di Ferrara gained his European specialization in orthodontics. He is member of several Orthodontic Associations, both Italian and foreign, among which: Società Italiana di Ortodonzia (SIDO, cultural advisor, 2000-01), Associazione Italiana Specialisti Ortodonzia (ASIO, president, 2005), EOS, AAO, and WFO. In addition, he is diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO), member of the European Board of Orthodontists (examiner 2006-08, Chairman of the Examiners 2009-11 and President 2013-15) and of the Italian Board of Orthodontics
(president 2006-07), active member of the Angle Society of Europe and of the Edward H Angle Society of Orthodontists
(East component).

He was member of the Scientific Committee of the International Orthodontic Congress held in Paris in 2005 and of the XII International Symposium on Dentofacial Development and Function held in Cairo in 2008. Dr. Cozzani has been invited more than once as a speaker to Congresses of the American Association of Orthodontists. He has been maintaining didactic activities at the Centro Studi e Ricerche di Ortodonzia for over 9 years. His research activity focuses on: molecular biology and bone regeneration, while his clinical interest is focused on early treatment, noncompliance appliances, temporary anchorage devices, selfligating brackets, clear aligners.

Dr. Cozzani has held seminars at many Universities in Europe and abroad. He has been a “Professore a contratto” for the “Corso di Perfezionamento in Ortodonzia Pre e Post chirurgica” of Università di Parma during the academic years 1994-1995 / 1995 – 1996, at the “Scuola di Specializzazione in Ortodonzia” of Università di Ferrara (1999-2009) and at the “Scuola di Specializzazione in Ortodonzia” of Università di Cagliari 2010- 2013 then he was appoint full professor of Orthodontics and Gnathology at the Università di Cagliari (2013). He has a private practice limited to orthodontics in La Spezia, Italy.
